Last Oda - Introduction

“If you do not speak to warn the wicked man to renounce his ways, he will die of his sins. But I’ll hold you responsible for  his death.” – Ezek 3:18

In the early fifties when the existing higher institutions in Nigeria were more or less controlled and dominated by Whites and colonial ideologies, all kinds of machinations were employed by the Whites to intimidate and lord things over the few black staff, and students in the universities.
Victimization, oppression, nepotism, and violations of rights were among the tools used by these Whites to carry out certain pro-colonialist agenda.
At a point few black students with ‘guts’ began to rally around each other to draw strength and support from each other to check perceived excesses of the Colonialist who dominated and oppressed them in their very homeland.
The 1950s also marked a heightening of the nationalist movement and the sad recourse to tribal alignments in the country. “Quick as always to absorb the worst tendencies of many nationalist movements, the University
College, Ibadan, itself became a breeding ground for the worst kind of tribal clubs. The Students’ Representative Council, all forms of students’ activity, including sports; became mere expressions of tribal pettiness” (National Association of Seadogs website, 2005).
Men In Cities It was not long before some of the students with ‘guts’ seized the bull by the horn, and began to transmute some of the already existing social clubs into opposition groups – to resist the unwholesome acts and the negative effects on the Nigerian polity.
In the front line of these crystallizing opposing groups were the now Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka with six others - Ralph Okpara, Pius Oleghe, Ikpehare Aig-Imoukhuede, Nathaniel Oyilola, Olumuyiwa Awe, Sylvanus U. Egbuche, making the ORIGINAL SEVEN, who founded the Pyrates Confraternity in the University of Ibadan in 1952, to curtail the perceived excesses and anti social tendencies (Seadogs website, 2005; Eguavon, 2008).
The fraternity, which started in the then University College Ibadan – Jolly Roger 1, blossomed in the sixties, and began to spread its tentacles and decks to other higher institutions in the country. However, it was not long before rancor and acrimony crept into the confraternity, and began to threaten the unity of this family. In what he alleged as violations of the confraternity creed, Bolaji Carew, took another ‘bold’ step to correct the observed ills, by pulling out of the Pyrates Confraternity, with some like minds - Kunle Adigun, and Tunde Jawando, to form the Buccaneer Confraternity, in late 1972 (Alora website, 2005).
In 1976, the Buccaneers Modaship gave birth to numerous Decks, established in various parts of the country. As these went on other fraternities were founded. The Supreme Eiye Confraternity, which emerged once again from the west, more or less as a tribal action group, was allegedly formed in 1965 as a group of three, and later blossomed into a confraternity in 1969 (Supreme Eiye Confraternity website, 2008, Rotimi, 2005). The Black Axe Confraternity sprang up in University of Benin in 1977 (Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, 2005; Black Axe website, 2004). The Supreme Vikings Confraternity sprang from the east in 1982, founded at the University of Portharcourt (Vikings Confraternity website, 2008); as well as the Klansmen Konfraternity, in 1983 at the University of Calabar (Welligthon, 2007). The Mafites Confraternity came into existence almost within the same period.
It was not long, before the country was engulfed in the phenomenon – lined north to south, east to west with a plethora of confraternities. Other notorious campus confraternities were as well formed. At the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), the Brotherhood of the Blood, (Black Beret) was formed. Needless to say that countless groups appeared, including: Second Son of Satan (SSS), Night Cadet, Sonmen, Mgba Mgba Brothers, Temple of Eden, Trojan Horse, Jurists, White Bishops, Gentlemen Clubs, Fame, Executioners, Dreaded Friend of Friends, Eagle Club, Black Scorpion, Red Sea Horse, Fraternity of Friends, and Victor Charlie Boys — allegedly formed by Professor Augustine Ahiazu during his tenure as vice-chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (Welligthon, 2007).
The spark ignited in 1952 began to spread like wild fire! A few years later, it became glaring that the fraternities had derailed from their original course – navigating anticlockwise with neither the guiding sight of the Polaris nor the Orion – engaging in activities contrary to the dictates of their creeds.
The Pyrates and Buccaneers, realizing what had become of their brainchild, were among the first to publicly denounce and dissociate themselves from the nefarious activities of the modern day frat men, operating in the various higher institutions. The Pyrates, in July 1974, following the Odas of Captain Blood, closed down all ‘ABC’ Decks (undergraduate fraternities) all over the country, bidding farewell to active campus affairs.
The Buccaneers, during their “DOUBLOON” in 1982 by the Odas of the Grand Eye submerged all the Buccaneering Decks in the country, in a bid to have a grip at the organization once again.
However, just as before, ODAS were no longer ODAS and the fraternities continued to flourish in the universities, and other higher institutions, while stubbornly insisting that they were still part of the main body and enjoying uninterrupted patronage from the Lords. Apparently due to the misconceptions of the frat men doctrine of ‘Broda Deliver Broda’; the various fraternities ran amok and went on rampage, killing and undermining each other. The main objectives of the first fraternity, were thus, changed from the original plan of fighting social injustice and academic corruption, to fighting and struggling for supremacy and domination, among the different fraternities.
Whether marooned or submerged, the efforts made by the senior frat men to extinguish the already flaring fire in the fraternities in the Nigerian higher institutions have failed to achieve the desired results. The horrifying activities of the various fraternities in the schools have pricked the conscience of the nation. Almost six decades after the first fraternity emerged in the Nigerian scene; tertiary institutions in the country have turned into dens for brutes, vandals, assassins, armed robbers, and misguided felons, with close to sixty percent of male and twenty percent of the female students belonging to one fraternity or the other.
The alarming resurgence of violence and killings associated with cult activities in the country in the past few years, and their patronage by politicians, call for serious concern and demand drastic action to combat this repulsive menace. It has become quite obvious that the fraternities should not only be submerged, but also entirely torpedoed.
This piece is intended to neither raise any confraternity against the other nor glorify one over the others. It is more or less an X-ray of what has become of these ‘one-time-commendable’ groups, and how it has eaten deep into the polity – weaving frat men, university administrators, politicians, and high-level government officials into an intricate underground and dangerous network; with the ugly potential of wrecking the nation. Readers are strongly dissuaded from thinking otherwise.
Bridesmaid Gifts at The Knot Wedding Shop In reviewing the activities of these families, it is the intension of the author to discourage would-be frat men from taking that step, and to persuade those already in it to quit.
One fact, which currently seems very obvious to almost every Nigerian, is that Confraternities as they exist in the universities and other higher institutions in the country at the moment, are no longer CONFRATERNITIES, but have transmuted into deadly antisocial monsters that ought to be curbed. Every well-meaning Nigerian has to stand up and fight it. If we do nothing to stop the stench of blood that has started in our higher institutions now, the stench will definitely increase to a level we just cannot withstand, even with our nostrils covered.
I guess I have done mine with this little piece. If you already belong, take a pause, and ask: What have I achieved? What have I gained? And what have I lost? Are you sure you still have your peace? Or are you not afraid?

WHY NOT TAKE THAT BOLD STEP?

    1. I live in the US and I will definitely buy your book. I am now in my late 40's and I am married with 5 kids. By the Grace of God I was able to graduate from Medical School in Jos. I agree that everything got out of hand across the country soon after I graduated. The idea when I joined the Mafia in Jos in 1986 was that we would all meet in the corridors of power and that we would look out for each other as we climbed the ladder of success. (Similar to the Us Fraternity Skull and Bones)
As a medical student and the first Don of Una Sasakantina (UniJos which was the 14th Mob in the country. The First one was Uno Brigado which was started in Ife in 1972 by some disgruntled Pyrates) our goal was to ensure that we all graduated and that we were successful because the focus was on the future. Now that we are grown men with families when I speak to my guys about University we are greatful that we all graduated from school. We were not Angels and we made it clear that we were not going to tolerate any mess from the other groups. But at that time no one was being killed in Jos as was the case down south. What we did do was recruit a well balanced individual who was upwardly mobile and for whom it was bad for his reputation to be known to be in a Fraternity. This was because each new member had so many other things going for him other than just being in a frat. A lot of other frats recruited the rough tough bush guy who no one in the school new and only developed notoriety and influence when he joined a fraternity. As a result, in Jos we were very very secretive about our membership while other fraternities were loud and threw there weight around. We kept a very low profile and avoided trouble as much as possible. If another group went out of their way to find our trouble once the decision to take action was made they would get more trouble than they could handle. Hence for a number of years we were very quiet and were left alone while the other groups battled it out. During my time Mafia men were usually quiet across the country. That is why in your introduction we weren't even mentioned. We are and have been very much around for the last 50 years but it has never been the goal to make noise, brag and bully like some of the other fraternities. We actually were the 3rd Fraternity formed after the Buccaneers. My goal is to get some of my guys and start to get involved with the young guys in Nigeria to give them some guidance and keep them out of trouble with the hope that at least my own Fraternity can rid themselves of the bad eggs and recruit future leaders and positive contributors to our society rather than criminals.

ps- Just for the record nobody drinks blood. It's a mixture of alcohol that we refer to as blood. Since many fraternities originated from the Pyrates I doubt any of the other groups do either. If I'm wrong and they do then all I can say is they are obviously not very intelligent individuals.
Take Care and sorry for the long comment.

I believe obviously you do not reside in benin city where youths die everyday from cult clashes..I am from benin city and i have been a member of the Neo-Black-Movement of africa akA BLACK AXE for 10 years, by the grace of God i was able to graduate frm Auchi Polythecnic, and i am boldly telling you that i never enjoyed all the things i did during that era.. Instead of considering turning frm ur evil ways, you are there ignorantly chanting "Buccaneers too rugged"..One of the major problem in my state now (Benin) is death resulting from cult clashes. Every year we record an average death of 40 to 50 youths. Talk of violet cult groups like Black Axe, Eiye, who knows Buccaneer? Its obviously you haven't seen anything, So SHUT UP and repent....

  6. Did you say the Pyrates, in July 1974, closed down all its undergraduate fraternities? That cannot be true - the close down should be much later. This is because while I was at the University of Ibandan between 1977 and 1982, the Pyrate Confraternity was very active and non-violent - so also were the other frats on campus then - Buccaneers and Eiye. We actually did not hear of the frat violence and killings until about the late 1980s. May be the close down of the undergraduate pyrate frat was in 1994 and not 1974. Please check and confirm. Nevertheless I wish to commend you for such an interesting piece.

    1. I guess the author was referring to July 1984 (http://www.nas-int.org/history.html?showall=&start=1). Must have been a typo. But nonetheless I think the author was a bit sarcastic about the shutting down of the campus pyrates frat. From the blog of the book (on this site) and having read the entire book, the story was referring to fights between Pyrates and other fraternities even after the so called shutting down of the campus groups by the different organisations. The author clearly stated in the introduction that the cults flourished despite the shutting down. The guy seems to have a way of double-wording himself (you really need to read between the lines to get the gist). I personally noted that he used Pirates in the plot instead of Pyrates he used in the introduction. Nice try though.

  9. I commend the Authors effort on this publication,it is obvious that the Author may not get distinct and detailed info bout some cult groups and their ethics but to a great extent he is right.it is also true that the present day undergraduates has completly deviated from what the aims of these anti racial and social injustice groups were meant to be.if you that is singing praise of buccaneers or a particular group has ever visited the univ.of Nigeria,Ebonyi state Univ,Uniben AAU,u will keep your Mouth shut as you have been asked to.some claimed to put a stop to its activities on campuses but even at higher level there's stil rancour among members.Nigeria Univ, poly, colleges of Eductn and other higher institutes of learning on daily basis lost potentials and tomorrow leaders to cult related issues as battle of supremacy has taken the order of the day,i ponder how men under the likes of Prof wole Shoyinka and bolaji Carew would feel seeing the organisations they formed uprightly now been run in the reverse manner.i here by stand out to plead with Churches round our country to join hands in prayers for the youths of our country cos this fight is more like a spiritual battle that requires devine intervention......

  10. Mr. Publisher indeed you have done a great job by making a public knowledge and understanding of what confraternities were "meant" to be, because I for one have been persuaded, cornered, sweet mouthed, to join some particular groups by names "buccaneers", and "vikings" for reasons I know nothing about. Amongst the promises , were connection, protection, and other things that I don't lack. Although, I was almost convinced into giving in their sweet talks ("fine boy", "you are intelligent" "this is the place for you"), but I know what is right from what is wrong (it's as simple as that). Please, I am a student with purpose for success and to make my parents happy. Young boys and girls, I am not a perfect example to emulate, but make well thought out purpose for your life.

  11. You know, whenever I read things like this I laugh because let's be truthful to ourselves. The real reason people like wole soyinka and his crew formed pyrates was for power. The same reason why there was a fallout and Buccaneers was formed was because of power. When you are long and in school all you want is power. And power corrupts. That is why foreign fraternities have adult supervision. To check the struggle for power. Watch all this gang movies and read the stories, young people are always looking for power. When the other generation moved on and didn't keep a tight rope on the younger generation, the corruption of power grew to what we have now.

  16. its a fact that confraternity is wrecking havoc in our high institutions, but i will like to point out the fact that a fraternity as a body in any particular institution may still b keeping to its founding fathers codes of conduct, but some members of the fraternity whom are low life's will hide under the umbrella of belonging and be constituting nuisance to the public. Am glad that most of the responds here are from old men in individual frats, so i point it out to u to address fraternity graduate bodies to go back to the Nigerian high institution to give ur legacies good orientations. I think that main problem is that these young cultist lack orientation or that who so ever is giving them that orientation now is doing it wrong. remember that without rules, society collapse. also that ur graduate bodies in each state should from time to time have a say in major affairs of ur high institution frats in ur states. so as to keep their actions in check. Cause if the number one knows that for any action he takes or his members take will b answerable to higher authorities & that he will b held accountable for any fuck ups, he will keep himself and his boys in check. i think this can be a start to curtail stupidity in our campus cult. rather than barging here about who u were or ur frat originality. 17. To me, I will believe that the founders are actually happy about the way things are now. if they aren't really happy with the way bloods are being shed in the country due to fraternity activities, they would have called themselves together inorder to give students a different orientations and teach them how to get together and work as team inorder to make themselves better in future. If there can be awareness programs in nigerian institutions and government agrees to supportive, I believe the so called bucanneers and aiye, eiye, kk, virkins, pirates and etc will think of working together to better their life if that was really the initial motive. Let's say the truth friends. There is more to this!!

    1. Killing has never been intelligent, for the life you take can never be reborn or recreated by you. The life of a man belongs to his maker so why take it from him? Most of these cultists act without reasoning and intelligence for when a man kills a man he ends a destiny and doesn't just destroy a life he destroys other people's lives as well because every indidual is connected to a family who cares for him. Let's be intelligent pls. Before you take a life consider the fact that you are bringing sorrow to a mother, a father and probably brother(s) and (or) sister(s). You have also terminated the inflow of unborn children into this world because when a man dies he goes with his seeds. Killing a man is one of the most stupidest thing a man can ever do. AroNorsemen! 24. I don't think the epidemic of violence will ever stop as long as cults continue with their self-praise and deluded grandeur, preaching a sense of supremacy to members. If you go around making gullible young guys feel superior to everybody else due to being a member of cult XY it is to be expected that they will act against others who claim the same for themselves. And if you value "ruggedity" at the same time, violence is what you get. Invariably. It is quite alarming that people coming out of university with such twisted values are the (future) elite in Nigeria. The last thing we need in any position of authority are such mendacious, brainwashed, murderous individuals. We can see where it leads already: in the case of Black Axe there were several cases of murderers being arrested but then bribed out again by high-ranking members in influential positions. While those claim to fight tirelessly against campus violence in public, they apparently approve of it behind the scenes. Murderers hence enjoy impunity and can get back to their violence immediately. Top cultists enjoy impunity because they have infiltrated positions of power. In the end they can keep doing their shit and nothing can really be done against it because they have their criminal fingers in everything. Our system is rotten from top to bottom and it will not get better as long as all the wrong people with all the wrong values are grabbing power.

A good attempt to draw attention to the violence that has plagued higher institutions of learnings in Nigeria as a result of the activities of misguided youth. While it is very important to so, Writers, observers, commenters etc, must be fully equipped with precise and accurate information. This is important because it not only give credibility to his/her work; it also sustains readers' interest to beyond the first page. Also, efforts should be made to clearly distinguish between a confraternity, cult, gang etc because they are often mis-used, confused, or inter-used much to the confusion of readers. As a way forward to ending violence on both streets and campuses, a serious dialogue should be held by all parties involved to state clearly their aims and objectives; All their members should be duly registered with the dean of students' affairs, as well as their activities on campuses. strengthening of frequent dialogue amongst the parties; strengthening of security forces to covertly and overtly monitor these violent group and making sure the rule of law applies to its fullest extent whenever it is being breached. Ex-members being involved in the activities of on-campus members-by way of acting as referees for new initiates, and granting final approval to highly sensitive issues; Giving recognition to the best group annually in whatever field they have chosen to serve humanity in order to encourage positive attitude etc.

I'm sure the Pyrates at the University of Ibadan then, have very good foresight when they banished your current leaders from their fold in the early days.. However instead of them going away in peace they resorted to form 'the bucaneers' derisively known among us students then as 'bukoko' - just because they must belong to something.!
Actually your lot initiated the current deadly activities as witnessed in all Nigerian campuses today. I still remember the days when bucaneers would invade the female's hostel at night lo rape the students and then scattered copy regalias and other paraphernalias of the Pyrates Confraternity around the place so that the Pyrates could carry the blame the next day! Doing just about anything to tarnish the name of Wole Soyinka and the image of the Pyrates.
Have you changed since then ? Definitely No!

  31. You stated in this piece that '...Bolaji Carew, took another ‘bold’ step to correct the observed ills, by pulling out of the Pyrates Confraternity, with some like minds...'
Well to set the record straight, Bolaji Carew did not take any 'bold step' to correct any 'observed ills' in the Pyrates Confraternity as there were none. The man and others like him then were simply expelled from the Pyrates Confraternity as a result of behaviours and attitudes unbecoming of a 'Pyrate' What the group he later founded turmed out to be on Nigerian campuses will convince anyone who have a contrary opinion or version of events. You can also read what other 'bucaneers' who have commented on this page have to say. They don't appear very proud of their history either.

    1. I will tell you frankly, to renounce, you need to sincerely make up your mind to quit. Above all, you can never quit without being born again and following strictly the teachings of christ in a good church e.g winners Chapel, Redeemed, etc. If you try to quit otherwise, you will only succeed in relating with others who are not familar to you or get carried away at some time and get back into the game. Only Jesus can save. I am telling you this from experience as a once rugged Axe Man. Aye for life is very true without Jesus. You must understand that all cult groups have a demon or god they worship. remember KRF, Jacko, etc. These demons or god help to pull members perpetually into darkness that only the light of Jesus can bring you out from.

BAN is also non- political, and is not a social club. We denounce oppression, corruption, tyranny, human rights violations and all forms of societal abuse. We abhor non-progressive conventions that are detrimental to the societies we live in.

We believe in the promotion of societal values, the upliftment of the oppressed; and enjoin our membership (who are fortunate to be selected after a thorough and rigorous set of interviews) to uphold the values that are in accordance with the demands of leadership and good citizenry.

In our eyes, everyone is equal and deserves equal opportunities, devoid of fear or favour. We embrace a philosophy of "BRODA DELIVER BRODA" which expresses our belief in teamwork and communal progress through selflessness, sharing, and protecting others in their time of weakness or vulnerability.Implicitly, every Buccaneer is challenged to give and to support his broda and to expect the same in return.

As Sea Lords, no challenge is considered too daunting The courage that has propelled our fearless and progressive stance on issues of public probity is traceable to our cherished mottos of BRODA DELIVER BRODA in championing causes that positively impact the societies we live in. We conduct our struggles on the high planes of dignity and discipline.

    We remain Buccaneers !

  35. Hi everybody! I have a question about nigerian cults and i would be glad if anyone answered me.
I would like to know if is it possible for a boy who never attended university to enter one of this cult? I mean since they "have transmuted into deadly antisocial monster " as the author says, is it possible they are looking for other members just because they need people to carry on their affair and they don't care where these members come from? Is it possible for a boy who nevere went to school to become a member of the Eyie cult for instance?
